Bobby Moesta joins Chris Burkhard to rethink how we make career moves and why employees may actually be the ones doing the hiring.
For 35 years, I’ve worked at the intersection of people, careers, and hiring.
And for most of that time, we’ve talked about hiring from the company’s point of view.
Bobby Moesta challenged me to flip that around.
“Employees hire companies more than companies hire employees.”
Bobby is the co-creator of the Jobs to Be Done framework and co-author of Job Moves: Nine Steps for Making Progress in Your Career. His research into more than 1,000 career transitions suggests that people aren’t simply looking for their next job. They’re trying to make progress, and the kind of progress they need changes depending on where they are in life.
In this conversation, we get into the four career “quests” Bobby’s research uncovered, why knowing what gives you energy and what drains it matters more than another resume rewrite, and why the best person to manage your career is ultimately you.
We also talk about something I see all the time: people who know they need a change, but move so quickly that they never stop long enough to understand what they’re actually moving toward.
If you’ve ever asked yourself, “What should I do next?”, this one is worth your time.
